Pneumonia symptoms
If you suspect pneumonia based on the signs or symptoms, see your doctor as soon as possible. Pneumonia is part of the overall infection, and pneumonia symptoms include high fever, a relatively slow heart rate, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and chest pain. The number of days you take antibiotics depends on your general health, how serious your pneumonia is, and the type of antibiotic you are taking.
Although pneumonia was regarded by William Osler in the 19th century as "the captain of the men of death", the advent of antibiotic therapy and vaccines in the 20th century have seen radical improvements in survival outcomes. There is a vaccine for pneumococcal pneumonia, a bacterial infection which accounts for up to a quarter of all pneumonias.
