Complications of Dengue Fever
Most people with mild Dengue fever recover within five to 14 days. The usual signs of Dengue fever disappear but, some people, particularly adults, may feel listless, tired and even depressed for several weeks to months after being infected. In some severe cases, Dengue fever can lead to dengue hemorrhagic fever and Dengue shock syndrome, which can cause heavy bleeding, shock and — in a small number of those with these conditions — death. Children under 15 living in countries where the Dengue fever virus is widespread, and people infected more than once with different forms of the virus, are more likely to develop Dengue hemorrhagic fever. In more severe cases of Dengue hemorrhagic fever, the condition can suddenly worsen and lead to shock syndrome. These conditions may result in blood vessel and liver damage, and can be life-threatening.
