The conventional wisdom suggests that the idea of playing pranks and inflicting practical jokes upon unsuspecting friends or strangers can be traced back to the adoption of the Gregorian calendar in 1564, which moved the New Year's Day holiday back to January. So, the most famous from all the April holidays is certainly April Fools Day. Many writers suggest that the restoration of January 1 as New Year's Day in the 16th century was responsible for the creation of the holiday, but this theory does not explain earlier references. The ancient Romans marked March 25th by honoring the goddess Hilaria with a festival, filled with games and amusements. Have children create original works of art with the theme of Earth Day and ecology and find a venue to display them, whether it's a local business or the refrigerator at grandma's house. National museums and archeological sites have free admission and some have special events and guided tours.
